Omer ari gsu1/22/2024 ![]() Due to my background as an English language learner and my graduate work in Applied Linguistics, I also have a keen interest in research and pedagogical advances in teaching English. For my dissertation research, I designed and implemented fluency interventions in order to specify the effects of this type of training on reading comprehension processes. ![]() The insights I gained from that work has driven me to uncover individual differences in the reading processes that take place in real time. I worked with college readers who experienced reading problems as a graduate student. Shortly afterwards, I went back to school to get my doctorate in Language and Literacy Education with a focus on the cognitive processes of reading. After two successful years in the program, I started teaching English to international students at Kaplan Inc, Atlanta, GA. In the August of that year, I came to the U.S. I received a bachelor’s degree in Foreign Language Education from the prestigious Bogazici University, Istanbul, Turkey in 2001. Four years of intensive English education in a Turkish high school sealed for me a future in teaching English. Moving to a big city presented opportunities that would have been a mere dream for a farm boy. I attended first grade at the only school in the area before my family made the fateful move to the south-coast city of Mersin, where I spent most of my formative years. I was born and raised on a farm in central Turkey towered by the beautiful Taurus Mountains that reach from the Alps. Working with those kids was a life-changing experience. At ASU I also had a chance to work with kids struggling in reading. I finished my doctorate in 2010 and worked for three years after that at Appalachian State University (ASU) teaching undergrad and grad courses on foundations of literacy and reading psychology. I have a master’s in Applied Linguistics and a doctorate in Reading, Language and Literacy both from Georgia State University.
